Sukanta Majumdar Replaces Dilip Ghosh As BJP Bengal President Amid Defections

Kolkata: The Bharatiya Janata Party on Monday has appointed Lok Sabha MP Sukanta Majumdar as the BJP President of West Bengal replacing Dilip Ghosh. Ghosh has been appointed as the national vice president of the BJP Party. The comes 10 days before the assembly bypolls in the state, including in the crucial Bhabanipur constituency where West Bengal chief minister Mamata Banerjee will be BJP’s Priyanka Tibrewal.

Former governor of Uttarakhand, Baby Rani Maurya has also been made the national vice president of the BJP Party. The new BJP President of West Bengal Sukanta Majumdar was earlier elected from the Bengal’s Balurghat constituency in 2019 during the 2019 Lok Sabha election.

A first-time MP, Majumdar had formerly served as a member of the BJP’s state election management team. He also serves as the party’s co-convenor for the Uttar Banga Zone. “Congratulations to Dr. Sukanta Majumdar as the new President of the Bharatiya Janata Party. I wish him success,” his predecessor Dilip Ghosh tweeted upon his appointment.

The Bengal BJP unit has been witnessing a series of defections in last few months. Earlier three MLAs and one MP leaving the party for the TMC since the latter won the state assembly elections by an overwhelming mandate in May.
